Cosmic Circles

Dickie Wilkinson

Artwork Part of ‘Chaos‘ (Issue 21)

On a roughly painted black background are thirteen white circles with black speckles and fluorescent patches.

The Science

Cosmic Circles was inspired by the big bang theory of the Universe; that out of nothing came not just something, but everything. Scientists expected the ‘big bang’ to expand uniformly but it didn’t, it clumped and collected into areas of activity and networks of design. It is this chaos that has become what we know as life.

The Medium

This piece is acrylic on 105 x115cm approx on pure pulp lining paper. It began by my dropping marker pens repeatedly onto a piece of paper whilst trying to get my head around creating something out of literally nothing, and also how such unimaginably small particles have made something so uncomprehendingly vast. I then photocopied these marks up to a larger scale and cut them out as circles and ring shapes, applying them to the paper and adding acrylic paint in a random fashion. Inside what first presents as chaos, the human eye then begins to see balance and rhythm; a universe in progress.

The Artist

Dickie W is a practising artist based in the North East of England. Whilst having always been creative, he has only recently started to pursue a career as a full-time artist. This was inspired during lockdown when he was inspired by watching science documentaries to create artwork exploring his lay interpretation of scientific theories. To date, he has had several solo exhibitions across the UK and is currently seeking collaborations with scientists to further inspire his work.
