The Science

Climate science points to the need for rapid and substantial social change. Such a fundamental transformation requires new methods, paradigms, and practices, like the ECOtarot, that address not only structural, technological, and systems change, but also attend to subjective dimensions of transformation. Indigenous Nations and peoples of the Global Majority have  been impacted by resource extraction and the resultant dumping of waste, polluting of water, and species loss.‘The Nine of Air, Reversed’ in the ECOtarot alerts the querent that resourced people are waking up to these truths, and we are collectively nearing the end of this cycle of pollution and destruction.

The Medium

I ground and mixed natural pigments with gum arabic and then painted the resulting colours onto handmade paper crafted from agave, recycled cotton, and linen. This was then screen printed to produce the original 3" x 5" artwork, and scanned to generate a digital image. It is 1 of 78 cards that make up the ECOtarot deck as a whole, which exists as a special edition of 8 and also is reproduced for sale (in its second printing).

Information about how this tarot deck is interpreted using a combination of traditional methods and up-to-date climate science can be found at: www.adrienejenik.net/ecotarot
