Linear Chaos

Andrea Troncoso

Artwork Part of ‘Chaos‘ (Issue 21)

The Science

Inspired by this issue's theme, I started carving what would represent chaos as opposite of recognisable patterns. In maths, physics and many fundamental sciences we are constantly seeking for patterns, where chaos is not predominant. But it is there where we will find not only answers but questions too. The pencil is an anchor to our previous way of documenting out findings.

The Medium

Dry-point  or etching is a transferring art technique, where you carve or scratch a metal plate. What you carve is what you get printed later in the press. The carved plate is zinc or acrylglass, and the "drawing" is carved with a metal point attached to a wooden pencil-type of wood. Then you ink the plate with water soluble ink; you remove the ink; and where the carving occurs, the ink will stay. Then the plate goes to a paper under a press with a rollbar of metal, that presses very hard. The medium is cellulose/cotton paper 250gr. 11x18 cm.
