The Science
The Scarlet Macaw has an average lifespan of approximately 30 years - the highest recorded among parrots. This longevity is remarkable given thier high metabolic rate, which usually accelerates aging. Comparative analysis across parrot species has linked their lifespan to large relative brain sizes that protect against environmental mortality. Molecular factors also contribute because avian telomeres are longer than mammalian equivalents and they act as nucleotide caps, preserving genomic stability. 'Perched in Perpetuity' depicts this by having the wing feathers transition into DNA strands whose glowing tips representing the telomeres. The Medium
'Perched in Perpetuity' is a mixed-media piece created on A3 paper (29.7 x 42 cm or 11.69 x 16.54 inches). The artwork began with a hand-drawn ink outline to map out the bold DNA strands and telomere caps. For the Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao), rich gouache paints were layered with coloured pencils to make the bright colours pop and seamlessly blend the feathers into the genetic shapes. Designed from imagination while utilising photographic references, the piece pairs the organic beauty of this bird with the graphic lines of the DNA code.
The Artist
Aanya (she/her) is a Class 11 student based in India who has a deep passion for science and art. She works with multiple creative mediums, bridging technical academic disciplines and visual storytelling. Her work gained international recognition when she was awarded second place in the Rang Art Competition, 2024, organised by the Art Journal Foundation in Bangalore. Aanya is driven by a passion for biotechnology and entrepreneurship, aiming to use her platform to explore scientific communication and inspire the next generation of young women pursuing a career in STEM.
