Silence That Hides Storms

Rashmi Patil

Artwork for ‘Tension‘ (Issue 23)

Head and shoulders of a bearded man with his chin in his hand. His forehead is furrowed with worry. He is wearing a blue shirt and has dark hair with blue eyes.

The Science

Suppressing emotions can cause both mental and physical tension. This tension further releases the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline resulting in anxiety, depression and even dementia. The build-up of internal pressure is sometimes spontaneously released through yelling, crying, aggressive action, towards others, or self-harm. Measures to cope up with this type of tension include practicing self-awareness, identifying the triggers, and seeking professional help.

The Medium

This artwork was created with Brusto coloured pencils on A3 160 GSM. It was inspired by seeing a man with expressive eyes full of emotion, but where the viewer doesn’t know why; it might be financial struggle, family issues, peer pressure, or simply being introverted. The man’s tension was therefore palpably unsettling, but mysterious.
