Unión del Tiempo
Hilda Laura Martínez
Artwork for ‘Infinity‘ (Issue 24)
The Science
This artwork is inspired by how the human brain experiences time. Neuroscience shows that time is not perceived as a simple linear sequence, but is shaped by attention, memory and perception working together. As the gaze moves across the image, the brain actively organises shapes and relationships, creating a sense of continuity and change. The interaction between structured patterns and fluid forms reflects how the mind balances order and experience. In this way, the artwork connects visual perception with the lived experience of time, aligning with the theme of infinity as an open, ongoing process.
The Medium
Union of Time was created using oil paint on canvas. The original work measures 130 × 100 cm. The painting was developed in the studio through an intuitive, process-based approach rather than from a photograph or direct observation. Layers of structured forms and more fluid gestures were built gradually, allowing the composition to emerge through sustained looking and revision. The method emphasises time, repetition and visual rhythm, reflecting the perceptual process activated in the viewer.
