Artwork for ‘Birds‘ (Issue 26)

The Science

Birds can nest in human-made structures associated with civil engineering infrastructure. For example, a recent project in Hungary facilitated recovery of the peregrine falcon population by mounting nest boxes on pylons, which were widely embraced by birds as nesting sites. While not without its challenges, human-made structures such as pylons are now being encouraged for use as a conservation tool for conserving endangered birds where alternatives aren't available.
