Vortex
Roger Camp
Artwork Part of ‘Chaos‘ (Issue 21)
The Science
My photograph predates the history of black hole imaging (1972) and is loosely based on textual descriptions I was reading at the time in non-academic sources i.e. newspapers and general interest magazines. I was attempting to create the equivalent of deep space in my studio or in my artist's imagination something 'otherworldly.' I find it interesting that in retrospect my image more closely resembles current images of the Milky way's Black Hole taken by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory than the image proposed by physicist Jacob Bekenstein in 1972.
The Medium
This photograph was created using a single light source and a sheet of clear plastic in a dark room.
